Cyclone Midhili is moving towards the coast of Bangladesh; what can happen to Bengal?

Unleashing the Power: The Strength and Path of MidhiliCyclone Midhili is making a major impact as it approaches the shores of Bangladesh in a powerful demonstration of nature’s might. Let’s examine this next weather event in more detail.

The Origin: From Cyclone Midhili to the Deep Depression

Midhili began as a severe depression in the Northwest Bay of Bengal and has miraculously developed into a cyclone. This meteorological phenomenon, appropriately termed ‘Midhili,’ has been moving north-northeastward at 20 km/h during the last six hours. Its unrelenting intensification has resulted in the development of a cyclone, demonstrating the dynamic character of tropical weather systems.

Position and Path Right Now

According to the Alipore Meteorological Office, as of 5:30 am on Friday, Midhili is located 190 km east of Paradwip in Odisha, 200 km south-southeast of Digha, and 220 km southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh. With winds of up to 80 km/h, forecasts show that Midhili will continue on its north-northeast course in the next few hours, expected to make landfall on the Bangladeshi coast between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Consequences for Bangladesh: Severe Winds and Possible Landfall

The trajectory of Midhili’s estimated course indicates that it will pass through Bangladesh’s Mongla and Khepupara. On Friday and Saturday, severe gusts of 60 to 70 km/h are predicted in Khepupara and the neighbouring areas as Midhili makes her appearance. A further increase in wind speed to 80 km/h would highlight the cyclone’s extreme power.

Bengal Wary: Possible Effects on West Bengal

Although there is little chance that Midhili would strike West Bengal’s shore directly, the area is nevertheless on guard. For South Bengal, the Meteorological Department issued a yellow warning on Thursday and an orange alert on Friday. On Friday, there is likely to be significant rainfall in parts of Howrah, East Medinipur, and 24 Parganas. In addition, mild to moderate rain is predicted until Saturday in areas like Kolkata, Hooghly, Nadia, West Midnapore, East Burdwan, and Murshidabad.

Rain and overcast skies are unfolding events.

Because of the existing low pressure, rain started to fall on Wednesday in several West Bengal districts. Since Thursday morning, clouds have surrounded Kolkata in particular, with visibility extending as far as 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East-West Medinipur, and beyond.

In conclusion, as Cyclone Midhili gets closer, it’s critical that local officials and citizens in the impacted areas stay alert and follow safety precautions. The dynamic state of affairs highlights the unpredictability of tropical weather systems, underscoring the significance of anticipatory readiness.
